Spoonbills

On our field trip, I saw the most amazing pink birds called Spoonbills. You can't really see from the picture, but they have these roundish beaks that are used for scooping up the tiny marine life they eat. They actually are pink from eating shrimp, just like flamingos.

In this picture, they are preening, which is when they stimulate the oil glands under the feathers, which helps them stay clean and be smoother for flying.

I was really amazed by these birds. Our professor says it is rare to see them. I think the whole class was really excited they were out during our field trip.
